“Health” Is The Number One Topic Of Conversation For Most People Today

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Health” is the number one topic of conversation for most people today, but when we take a look at the “health” of our populations, we can see that it is getting much harder to create in a society that has everything automated for them.

Sure, it has been said that we are living longer than many of our counterparts did before us but at what cost, and is that trend going to stand? “Health” is not just something that happens it is something that we must pursue.

The pursuit of “health” has been taking place for as long as man has experienced illness and death, and will continue until we no longer exist on this planet. When we take a look at societies that exhibit longevity that is greater than our own we often try to get a handle on just what they are doing differently than we are.

A “healthy” dose of reality usually reveals that they are a more primitive society than our own and we are not inclined to revert to that method of living so we try to isolate what it is they are doing differently than we are that is resulting in better “health”.

One of the things that stand out in “healthier” societies is that they live a less harried lifestyle than we do. Of course, they have less of the conveniences than we do also. One would naturally assume after comparing the simpler lifestyles with our own that they would not be as happy as we are either.

After all they do not have all the bells and whistles that we rely so much upon. We just have to remember that “health” is not dependent upon things, but rather responds better to a heavy does of happy.

Speaking of relying on the bells and whistles that were originally intended to make our lives better, it takes a good many working hours to pay for all the stuff we accumulate. We also have to remember the maintenance and running costs that are involved as well; it takes even more hours of work to pay for those.

Oh, I have to say that I would be reluctant to replace my washing machine with hand washing all our laundry, but acquiring those conveniences does take its toll on my peace of mind, and probably my “health”.

Peace of mind is one of the things that we all know can help create better “health”, so why are we always trying to keep up with the Joneses. It is often that keeping up with the Joneses that drive our desires to accumulate so much. Now, take a look at what I just said before you take exception to it.

I did not say that we should not have the conveniences. What I did say was that making those purchases because someone else has the same thing can add stress to our lives that is unnecessary.

Stress has been proven to be the number one killer in our society today. I know, you thought it was heart disease or cancer or something like that. Well, heart disease and cancer and so many other disorders of our “health” are often a result of the stress that we allow to take over our lives. With this truth in hand, surely we should be doing something to reduce that stress.

To create better “health” in our lives and the lives of our families, reducing stress should be our number one goal, but how do we go about doing that? In my opinion, the first thing we should do is forget about the keeping up with the Joneses mentality. Just because “what’s his name” has a brand new car does not mean we have to have one also.

Along with that, just because “Mr. what’s his name’s” son has the latest greatest toy does not mean your son should have it. What the boy needs is more of your time and you can give it to him if you are not always trying to keep up with “Mr. what’s his name”.
